Arunachal Flash Floods: Massive Hunt for 4 Missing as Disaster Devastates Keyi Panyor District

A severe humanitarian and environmental crisis has affected Northeast India as persistent monsoon rains caused devastating flash floods and widespread landslides in Arunachal Pradesh's newly established Keyi Panyor district. The catastrophe hit with unexpected, extreme intensity in the low-lying regions around the public sector NEEPCO (North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited) project colony close to Poosa, within the Yazali circle. Fueled by heavy rainfall, a retaining wall under construction gave way, sending forth a cascade of mud and water that impacted almost 50 homes and carried off multiple cargo trucks. As multi-agency rescue teams, such as the NDRF, SDRF, and an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter, commenced extensive operations, officials found the body of 35-year-old schoolteacher Nirmala Gupta on Wednesday afternoon. A hurried effort is now in progress to locate four additional missing individuals, among them a 13-year-old youth. Due to rising water levels in the upper catchments and emergency discharges from the Ranganadi Dam, Assam has issued a high alert for downstream districts such as Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Sonitpur, preparing for swift increases along the Brahmaputra River system.
