BREAKING: Tibetan Man Dies After Self-Immolation Outside UN Headquarters In New York
A man died after setting himself on fire in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York on Thursday evening. Identified as Lobga Rangzen, a 42-year-old Tibetan living in the US for around 20 years, he was dressed in traditional monastic robes and holding a Tibetan flag when he self-immolated on a busy street during rush hour. First responders extinguished the flames within seconds, but Rangzen succumbed to severe burns at Bellevue Hospital.
The incident appears to be a protest against Chinese policies in Tibet. Police found a note at the scene reading “CHINA OUT OF TIBET,” a common slogan of the Tibetan independence movement. The United Nations confirmed the event occurred after scheduled meetings had ended for the day.
