A landmark federal trial against Meta Platforms has begun in Oakland, California, as 29 U.S. states accuse the company of deliberately designing Facebook and Instagram to addict children and teens for profit.

Led by California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey, the states claim Meta engineered features like infinite scroll, notifications, algorithms, and the “like” button to create compulsive use, contributing to anxiety, depression, and other mental health harms among young users.
