Typhoon Fung-Wong: 2 Dead, 1 Million Evacuated as Huge Waves Destroy Homes

Typhoon Fung-Wong caused severe destruction in the Philippines on Monday, unleashing floods and landslides that forced nearly one million people from their homes and left at least four dead.

The storm battered northern Philippines even as the country was still reeling from Typhoon Kalmaegi, which had killed at least 224 people in central regions before striking Vietnam, where five more deaths were reported.

Fung-Wong made landfall in Aurora province on Sunday night as a super typhoon, bringing sustained winds of up to 185 kph (115 mph) and gusts reaching 230 kph (143 mph).

The massive 1,800-kilometre (1,100-mile)-wide system weakened as it swept across mountainous northern areas and agricultural plains overnight before moving away from La Union and heading into the South China Sea, according to state forecasters.
