Why China Is Arresting Its Own Generals: Inside Xi Jinping’s Military Crackdown

China is currently navigating a significant military crisis following the investigation of its top uniformed officers, General Zhang Youxia and General Liu Zhenli. This latest purge targets the highest levels of the People's Liberation Army and represents a severe escalation in President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign. The crackdown stems from earlier scandals within the Rocket Force, where intelligence revealed embarrassing logistical failures, such as missile fuel tanks filled with water and malfunctioning launch silos. These defects exposed deep-seated graft that compromised national defense capabilities and embarrassed Beijing on the global stage. By targeting Zhang, a once-trusted ally, Xi is signaling that no official is immune from scrutiny. The move aims to tighten the Communist Party's grip over the armed forces and eliminate disloyalty, though foreign analysts warn that such drastic leadership changes may temporarily disrupt military readiness and operational planning.
