Tehran: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's wife Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh is still alive, Iranian media reported, adding that earlier reports of her death were not correct. Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh was injured in the US-Israeli airstrikes on the late Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's official residence in Tehran. While Khamenei was assassinated in the airstrike, his wife was injured and was subsequently hospitalised.
Earlier, it was reported that the 79-year-old had passed away a day after her husband's death on February 28. However, Iranian media Fars News has now claimed that Bagherzadeh is still alive. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's son Mojtaba Khamenei, who has succeeded him as the new Supreme Leader of Iran, also did not mention his mother during his first statement following his appointment to the post.
In a post on X, Fars News said, “We wish to inform that the wife of the martyred Leader of the Revolution is alive and the initial reports published regarding her martyrdom were incorrect. In recent days, following the martyrdom of the Leader of the Revolution, some media outlets mistakenly published news of the martyrdom of the wife of Martyr Ayatollah al-Uzma Seyyed Ali Khamenei."
Bagherzadeh is the sister of Hassan Khojaste Bagherzadeh, who is the former deputy director of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).
She has largely remained out of the public spotlight throughout her husband’s decades-long political career. Unlike many political spouses around the world, she rarely appears at official events or in media coverage. It is reported that she was in Khamenei's compound when it was attacked on the first day of the war.
Khamenei's residence collapsed after the bombing. It was reported that his body was found in the rubbles of his compound. A satellite image showed thick plume of black smoke emanating from the Iranian leader's compound following the attack.
