Dad Admits Wishing Kids 'Good Morning' Before Gunning Them Down In Bed, Killing 17-Year-Old Son

Michigan: A 44-year-old father has admitted killing his 17-year-old son and injuring his two other children since he was allegedly 'stressed' about a court appearance over a case of an indecent exposure incident in Michigan, America. Notably, he wished his children “good morning” before gunning them down in bed before school. He then attempted to take his own life.

The incident took place in September 2025.

Dad Kills Son, Leaves Daughter Paralysed

Jeffrey Smerer is said to have shot his 17-year-old son Kayleb Smerer in the living room and injured his two other sons, 12-year-old Kinzley and 13-year-old Bentley, in their bedroom. The brutal attack left Bentley with facial fractures, and Kinzley paralyzed from the neck down.

Notably, Kinzley used to love dancing and playing volleyball.

After launching terror on his kids, Jeffrey allegedly slit his wrist and took medication in an alleged suicide attempt in front of his wife. However, he managed to survive. His wife and 20-year-old son wrestled with him to stop wrecking further havoc in the house.

Dad Planned Attack For 1 Week

As per the police, Jeffrey had been planning to attack his children for one week.

His sister Victoria Frazer, in an interview with WXYZ, said, “He woke up, woke the kids up to go to school, and ya know, it was a regular day and something just happened.”

A detective claimed that before committing the crime, Jeffrey talked to himself in the mirror, “questioning himself if he was really going to do this”.

Dad Seemed ‘Fine’ A Night Ago

According to a GoFundMe page started to fund the Smerer family after the brutal attack, the father seemed fine the night before and had a “mental breakdown” on the day he committed the brutal act.

Jeffrey told police that when he got up that day, he was thinking about his court appearance over and was allegedly stressed about his sentencing in an indecent exposure charge from 2020.

Dad Admits To Crime

Jeffrey Smerer appeared before a court earlier this week where he admitted to his crime. He pleaded guilty to open murder, two counts of attempted murder, two counts of first-degree child abuse and five counts of felony firearm.

During his appearance, he was asked in court "Was it your intention or your plan to shoot the children in the home?" Jeffrey replied in affirmative. He was also asked if he intended to shoot himself as well. Jeffrey said yes and broke down in tears.
