'Threat to Humanity': Donald Trump Threatens to Take Away Rosie O'Donnell's US Citizenship
Even after moving to Ireland, O’Donnell has remained outspoken on American politics and sharply critical of the Trump administration.
Washington, DC: U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited his long-standing feud with television personality Rosie O'Donnell, this time with a threat to revoke her American citizenship. The escalation comes after O'Donnell publicly criticized the administration's handling of government forecasting agencies in the wake of the deadly July 4 floods in Texas, which claimed over 100 lives.
Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “Because of the fact that Rosie O'Donnell is not in the best interests of our Great Country, I am giving serious consideration to taking away her Citizenship.”
He further added, “She is a Threat to Humanity, and should remain in the wonderful Country of Ireland, if they want her. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”
While Trump has previously advocated for stricter immigration policies, including attempts to end birthright citizenship, his comments targeting O'Donnell mark a new and legally baseless frontier in his rhetoric.
Can a President Strip Citizenship from a U.S.-Born Citizen?
Legal experts were quick to point out that under U.S. law, the president cannot revoke citizenship from individuals born in the United States. The Constitution protects birthright citizenship, and courts have consistently ruled that it cannot be removed arbitrarily, especially not through executive action.
While naturalized citizens can, in rare cases, be stripped of citizenship for fraud during their application process, native-born Americans are constitutionally protected. O'Donnell, though currently applying for Irish citizenship, remains a U.S. citizen. O'Donnell was born in New York state.
A Feud Stretching Nearly Two Decades
The bitter public feud between Trump and O'Donnell dates back to 2006, when O'Donnell criticized Trump’s handling of the Miss USA pageant during an episode of The View. Trump responded with personal insults, most infamously referring to her with, “Only Rosie O'Donnell” when asked in 2015 about his offensive remarks toward women.
This latest exchange was sparked by O'Donnell’s recent TikTok video, in which she mourned the loss of life in the Texas floods and blamed the Trump administration’s earlier budget cuts to climate and disaster preparedness programs.
"What a horror story in Texas," she said. "When the president guts early warning systems and forecast agencies, these are the consequences we’ll see more often."
Rosie O'Donnell Responds to the Threat
Rosie O'Donnell, posted two sharp rebuttals on Instagram. "I still live rent-free in that collapsing brain of yours. You call me a threat to humanity – but I’m everything you fear," she wrote.
In another post, she accused Trump of wanting to “deport all who stand against” his alleged “evil tendencies.” In a March TikTok video, O'Donnell explained her decision to leave the U.S., saying she would return only “when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America.”
Rosie O’Donnell revealed earlier this year that she had moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old son, following the start of President Trump’s second term. In a TikTok video posted in March, she explained her decision, stating she would only consider returning to the U.S. “when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights in America.”
Despite moving away, O’Donnell has remained vocal on American politics. Just last week, she took to TikTok to hold President Trump accountable for the catastrophic flash floods in Texas.
“When the president dismantles early warning systems and undercuts the government’s ability to forecast weather events, these are the kinds of tragedies we’ll see more often,” she warned in the video.
