Tehran: Iran on Saturday claimed that it has attacked a Marshall Islands-flagged US-linked oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor in Iran through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. This comes as the war between US-Israel and Iran entered its eight day today.

According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the tanker, named ‘Louis P’, was warned by the Iranian Navy not to pass through the waterway. The tanker was subsequently attacked by a suicide drone operated by the IRGC Navy after it ignored the warning.

The IRGC said in a statement, “This afternoon, a drone strike was carried out on the Louise P tanker sailing under the Marshall Islands flag in the Persian Gulf.”

The Strait of Hormuz, which lies between Oman and Iran, is considered a vital international waterway for global shipping activities.

Following the commencement of the war, IRGC senior commander Ebrahim Jabari issued a stark warning to the world, saying, “The Strait is closed. If anyone tries to pass, the heroes of the Revolutionary Guards and the regular navy will set those ships ablaze.”

However, recently Iran refuted claims stating that the it has closed off the strait. Calling the claim “baseless and absurd”, Iran said, “Iran remains committed to international law and freedom of navigation. In reality, it is the U.S. that has endangered maritime security."

Israel-Iran War

The United States of America and Israel launched joint airstrikes on Iran on February 28 in a massive military operation, codenamed ‘Operation Epic Fury’ by the US and ‘Operation Roaring Lion’ by Israel. Iran retaliated and launched attacks on US military bases located in different countries in the Middle East, including the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Iran codenamed its retaliation 'Operation True Promise IV'.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said, “This operation against the positions of American-Zionist terrorists in the heart of the occupied territories and American terrorist bases began with massive explosions under the blessed code name 'Ya Hassan ibn Ali (peace be upon him)'.”

The war has entered its eight day today (March 7).
