Red 'Flag Of Revenge' Spotted At Iran's Iconic Jamkaran Mosque After Khamenei's Death | Here Is What It Means

Tehran: A red ‘flag of revenge’ was unfurled at Iran's iconic Jamkaran Mosque in the city of Qom following the assassination of the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The red flag is a symbol of anger and revenge, a feeling rising amongst the supporters of Khamenei after his demise in joint airstrikes by US and Israel.

In Shi'ite tradition, red flag is a call to avenge the death of a person who has been slain in an unjust manner. Following the episode of February 28, 2026, the red flag on signals anger among Iran's population and is is a symbolic call for retaliation after the assassination of Khamenei.

The unfurling of the red flag of revenge on the dome of the Jamkaran Mosque comes as Iran entered a period of 40-day of national mourning, with several Iranians demonstrating against the United States of America. Iranian leaders have called for avenging the death of Khamenei.

Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran considers it its legitimate duty and right to avenge the perpetrators and masterminds of this historic crime.”

"The assassination of the highest political authority of the Islamic Republic of Iran and a prominent leader of Shiism worldwide…is perceived as an open declaration of war against Muslims, and particularly against Shiites, everywhere in the world," he added.
 

The Jamkaran Mosque in Qom, which is roughly 140 kilometers from Tehran, is one of Iran's most sacred sites. It is a pilgrimage site for Shias.

In 2020, when General Qasem Soleimani in Iraq was assassinated by strikes ordered by US President Donald Trump, a red flag was raised at the same Jamkaran Mosque as a symbol of revenge, following which Iran launched ballistic missile strikes on US bases in Iraq.
