Shamsher Raj Kapoor popularly known as Shammi Kapoor was an Indian film director and actor. Shammi Kapoor was a prominent lead actor in Hindi cinema from the mid-1950s till the early 1970s. He made his debut in 1953 with the movie Jeevan Jyoti. Shammi Kapoor also made his Tamil debut in the 1992 hit crime-drama Amaran. Shammi Kapoor is denoted as the Elvis Presley of India. He starred in over 50 movies as lead actor and over 20 films as a supporting actor. His hit movies include College Girl, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Junglee, Singapore, Dil Deke Dekho, Janwar, Pyaar kiya Toh Darna Kya, China Town, Kashmir Ki Kali, Teesri Manzil, Andaz, Sachaai, An Evening in Paris, Bramhachari and many more.

Shammi Kapoor was admitted on August 7, 2011, at the Breach Candy Hospital, where he remained serious for the next few days and was kept on ventilator support. He passed away on August 14, 2011, due to chronic renal failure at the age of 79. To honour Shammi Kapoor, a brass statue of his was placed at Walk of the Stars at Bandra Bandstand in Mumbai.
