Suhasini Maniratnam is an actress who works in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada films. The actress opened up about her journey of being a TB survivor and how she hid her diagnosis to save herself from the stigma.
In an interview with The Better India, Suhasini said, “I kept my diagnosis a secret due to self-stigma and took medicaid for six-months. It was this stigma that pushed me to work for the community and create awareness about TB”.
As report of Mathrubhumi, the veteran actress was diagnosed with TB at the age of 6 and again at 36. She was later diagnosed with multi-drug resistant TB, which led to severe weight loss and affected her hearing.
Suhasini Maniratnam’ paternal cousins are Anu Haasan, Shruti Haasan and Akshara Haasan. She made her film debut in 1980 with Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe. She also featured in Vishnuvardhan in Bandhana, Suprabhatha, Muthina Haara and Himapatha among others.
She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the 1985 Tamil film Sindhu Bhairavi, directed by K. BalachanderThe veteran actress has even bagged other accolades including Filmfare Awards South, Kerala State Film Awards and Kerala Film Critics Association Awards.
Suhasini married film director Mani Ratnam on 26 August 1988 and the couple has a son, Nandan, born in 1992. The couple have been involved in the running of their production company Madras Talkies since 1997. Suhasini was appointed the honorary consul Of the Grand Duchy Of Luxembourg in 2015. She held the post until 2020. She also founded Naam Foundation in 2010 with the objective to empower single women.
