9 Members of Rajkot Jeweller Family Attempt Suicide Over Unpaid Dues Worth Rs 1.95 Crore

Nine members of the Adesara family, prominent jewellers from Rajkot, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide on Friday night due to severe financial distress. The family took the drastic step after two Mumbai-based businessmen allegedly failed to pay them for a significant gold jewellery order valued at Rs 1.95 crore, supplied last year.

The incident occurred in the Gundawadi locality, where the Adesara family resides. Despite the grave situation, the family members called an ambulance themselves and were promptly hospitalised. According to Bhaktinagar Police Station Inspector Mayurdhwaj Sarvaiya, the condition of all family members, including an eight-year-old child and a 67-year-old woman, is stable.

"They had been promised payment for the jewellery by the Mumbai-based businessman by Diwali 2023, but the money was not yet paid, and the family, as a result, was unable to pay their own loan instalments," said Ketan Adesara, one of the jewellers affected by the financial turmoil. Ketan and his brother jointly own a jewellery business in Rajkot's bullion market.

The family had been counting on the promised payment to clear their loan installments, but the continued delay in payment pushed them to the brink.

The police have recorded a station diary entry regarding the suicide attempt. "A case of cheating will be registered against the businessmen," added Inspector Sarvaiya.

Local authorities are investigating the matter, while the family continues to recover at a local hospital.
