Guwahati: A 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and abandoned by the roadside in Assam's Nagaon district on Thursday evening. The Class 10 student was returning home from her tuition when the assault occurred in the Dhing area. The incident has sparked massive protests across Assam.

The incident comes amid nationwide outrage over sexual violence following the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at a Kolkata hospital on August 9.

The minor girl was found in an unconscious state by the roadside and rescued by locals, who informed the police. Local residents rescued her and handed her over to the police. She is currently recovering in the hospital while authorities await the results of a medical test to confirm the assault.

Two persons have been detained for interrogation and a search is underway for others, a police officer said. Meanwhile, people from all sections of the society hit the streets on Friday morning demanding the arrest of the culprits.

Shopkeepers downed the shutters of their business establishments and social and political organisations demanded stringent action against the culprits and security for women and girls.

Tension prevailed in the area as Director General of Police G P Singh rushed to Dhing.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The horrific incident at Dhing, involving a minor, is a crime against humanity and has struck our collective conscience.” "We will NOT SPARE anyone & BRING the perpetrators to JUSTICE. I've directed @DGPAssamPolice to visit the site and ensure swift action against such monsters," Sarma posted on X.

In Nagaon, civil society groups have initiated protests, demanding that police apprehend all three suspects identified by the victim within 12 hours. Meanwhile, a bandh has been called in response to the assault.
