Chorus For Delhi HC Judge Yashwant Varma's Removal Grows After Rs 10 Crore Cash Stack Recovery

Huge controversy has erupted after a fire that broken out at the residential bungalow of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma led to an accidental recovery of a huge pile of cash. This major judicial scandal has led Supreme Court Collegium led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna to recommend the transfer of Justice Varma back to his parent High Court - Allahabad High Court which has enraged many. In the latest available information, Justice Yashwant Varma did not hold court today, court master says division bench is on ‘leave’ and any urgent mentioning can be made before another bench.

Fumed Netizens Demand Immediate Arrest

This massive amount of cash which is unaccounted for has raised serious questions on the integrity of Indian judiciary. Netizens have raised questions over the decision to transfer Judge Verma. Pointing at the double standards, objections were flagged over no inquiry thus far against the accused judge. 

Taking to Twitter, one user asked why the SC Collegium has quietly transferred Justice Yashwant Varma. “Why is he not being arrested. Really, why?" he wrote 

Another netizen asked, “Now, imagine if the same incident had happened to an ordinary citizen, what actions would the Judiciary have taken then?”

“If judges turn corrupt, whom will the common people trust?,” asked one user. 

X user Pravesh Jain expressed his disappointment and wrote how only the transfer of Delhi HC judge Yashwant Varma to Allahabad high court is not sufficient. He also stressed at the need to arrested the accused irrespective of his social strata. “These judges find it safe heaven to keep money at their home…who can dare to raid their homes! Morale of ordinary litigants is broken,” he added. 

How did the secret stash get exposed?

According to reports, a huge fire broke up at judge Yashwant Varma's residence when he was out of the town. His family members informed the fire brigade and police. As the firefighting officials successfully managed to douse the fire, a huge amount of cash were recovered from one of the rooms. 

Who is Justice Yashwant Varma?

Justice Yashwant Varma, born on January 6, 1969, started working as an advocate on August 8, 1992. He has completed his BCom (Hons) from Delhi University's Hansraj College. He earned his LLB degree from Rewa University, Madhya Pradesh.

Varma was appointed as an additional judge at the Allahabad high court On in 2014 and was elevated to a permanent judge in February 2016. In 2021, he was transferred to Delhi High Court. He had also served as the chief standing counsel for Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to August 2013.

Talking about this major judicial scandal and transfer of the judge to Allahabad HC, Vikas Singh, former president of Supreme Court Bar Association, told ANI, "It is a very serious matter because people have their trust in the functioning of the judiciary....transferring is not a solution. first, there should be an in-house inquiry. He should be asked to resign and not hold court. It shakes the credibility of the judiciary."

"We respect the system a lot. Each of the judges are respected a lot. We are shaken my lords and demoralised. Please take some steps. I am not expressing my pain any further and I am sure I am expressing the pain of many of my brothers. Please take some steps to see that such incidents do not happen," Senior advocate Arun Bhardwaj told PTI.
