Chennai Rains: IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert, Flights-Road Traffic Likely to be Affected

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Chennai, for the next 2-3 days; flights and road traffic may be affected.

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu capital has been witnessing heavy rain for the past few days and according to the India Meteorological Department, this weather may continue for a few more days; the IMD has issued a heavy rainfall alert for various districts of Tamil Nadu including Chennai, for the next two-three days.

Chennai Rains: Heavy Rainfall, Flood Alert Issued

As per the latest weather forecast for Chennai, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a press release, has issued a heavy rainfall alert for various districts, on October 18, 20 and 21.

Speaking of Chennai Rains, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre, moderate showers and/or thunderstorms are likely today and rains are expected till October 23.

A flood alert has also been issued for the districts of Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Tiruvannamalai districts. A flood warning has also been issued for Pappireddipatti and Harur districts; the SDRF and the fire and rescue services have also been asked to remain on alert in case of required assistance.

Tamil Nadu Rains: Latest Weather Forecast

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the IMD has issued ‘nowcast rain alert’ for nine districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kundrathur, Velachery, Purasaiwakkam, among others.

Most parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai have been witnessing heavy rain for the past few days, resulting in a flood-like situation in the state; the rains have resulted in waterlogged streets, disrupting the Chennai traffic. A warning has also been issued by the airlines for potential flight delays and cancellations due to the downpour.
