Guwahati: Days after massive protests erupted at IIT Guwahati over a student's alleged suicide, the institute's Dean of Academic Affairs, K V Krishna, has resigned. The protests began following the death of a third-year Computer Science student from Uttar Pradesh, who was found dead in his hostel room on Monday. Students demanded justice and called for improved mental health support on campus.

In a statement on Wednesday, IIT authorities confirmed receiving Krishna’s resignation, stating, "We are discussing this internally. A decision will be taken soon."

The protests, which started Monday evening, saw students gathering outside the administration building, with many boycotting classes in response to what they described as recurring student deaths on campus. This incident marks the fourth student death at IIT Guwahati this year.

Protesters claimed that the deceased student was suffering from health issues and became mentally distressed after being marked for failed attendance (FA). Despite submitting medical certificates, they allege the documentation was not accepted, which worsened his condition.

Students also demanded action against a professor accused of failing multiple students due to low attendance, despite several having valid reasons for their absence.

IIT Guwahati Director Devendra Jalihal met with the students and discussed their concerns. In a statement, the institute said, "As a new director who has taken charge recently, he is committed to resolving these issues and ensuring overall student well-being on campus."

Jalihal urged students to return to classes, stressing the need to maintain academic continuity while addressing their concerns. "While understanding and acknowledging the concerns of the students, it is crucial to prioritise academic continuity and maintain a peaceful campus," he said.

IIT authorities assured that the students' grievances are being taken seriously to prevent future tragedies. "The well-being of everyone remains our top priority, and we are fully committed to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all," the statement read.

Meanwhile, media personnel were barred from entering the IIT Guwahati campus to cover the protests and related developments.
