Manoj Kumar Verma Made New Commissioner of Kolkata Police
Senior IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma was made the new commissioner of Kolkata Police on Tuesday, replacing Vineet Goyal, according to a notification.
The decision to remove Goyal, who was under fire over handling of the rape and murder of the doctor at the RG Kar hospital, was announced by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday night after she met with agitating medics.
Goyal, who was of the 1994 batch, was made the ADG and IGP of West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF).
Verma, an officer of the 1998 batch, was the ADG and IGP (Law & Order) in his last assignment.
Jawed Shamim, an IPS officer of the 1995 batch, was made the ADG and IGP (Law & Order).
These major reshuffles came as the state grappled with an ongoing protest by junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College. On Monday evening, a crucial meeting took place between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the protesting doctors at her residence in Kalighat.
The meeting lasted nearly two hours, with both sides taking another two-and-a-half hours to finalise the minutes.
A delegation of 35 junior doctors arrived at the chief minister's residence at 6:20 p.m., and the discussions began around 6:50 p.m. The meeting ended by 9 p.m., but the doctors were seen leaving only at around 11:30 p.m. after presenting a memorandum outlining their demands to Banerjee.
The protest at RG Kar Medical College has intensified over the past week, with junior doctors demanding better working conditions, security, and addressing staffing shortages. The tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital after a grueling 36-hour shift has ignited protests. Known for her dedication and dreams, the crime has led to widespread demands for justice and punishment for those responsible.
