A mudslide in Nagaland's Chumukedima district killed six, damaged National Highway-29, and disrupted road links between Dimapur and Kohima.
In a tragic incident, six people have lost their lives due to a massive mudslide in Nagaland's Chumukedima district following heavy rainfall. The mudslide, which struck the areas of Pherima and Pagala Pahar, also severely damaged a significant portion of National Highway-29.
The mudslide, which occurred on Tuesday night, has washed away a section of the national highway, cutting off road communication between Dimapur, the state's commercial hub, and the capital, Kohima. The destruction has led to a complete halt in transportation on this critical route.
Casualties and Property Damage
The official reports confirm that six bodies, including that of a woman, have been recovered from Pherima. The mudslide has also caused extensive damage to numerous houses and vehicles in the area.
Government Response
In response to the disaster, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has announced that the state government is engaged in discussions with the Centre to expedite relief and rescue operations. In a post on X, Rio expressed his concern over the "large-scale destruction on NH-29" and assured that "authorities are on-site assessing the situation & helping those affected." He emphasized that the State Government will continue to push with the Government of India and NHIDCL for immediate measures to restore normalcy.
Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang also expressed his anguish over the calamity. "It brings deep anguish learning about the unfortunate calamity, which occurred last night near Pherima and Pagla Pahar, leading to loss of life and properties," he said. "Search and rescue operations are still underway, let us pray for the safety of those that are still missing."
Impact on Supply of Essentials
The disruption in road communication has led to panic buying in Kohima, with long queues forming at grocery stores, vegetable shops, and petrol pumps. However, Kohima Deputy Commissioner Kumar Ramnikant assured that there is no shortage of essential items. The administration is working with neighboring districts to ensure an uninterrupted supply of essential commodities and fuel via alternate routes.
