Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the second phase of the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro on September 16. The Phase-II network is spread over a 21-kilometre stretch connecting Motera station to GIFT City and Gandhinagar City.

Major Milestone In Gujarat 's Urban Transport Network

The new metro phase will reduce travel time to under 45 minutes, a significant improvement compared to the nearly 90-minute road journey during peak hours. Featuring modern AC coaches and state-of-the-art infrastructure, this phase is set to benefit thousands of daily commuters—office workers, students, and tourists alike—by offering a hassle-free and cost-effective transportation option. For many, the Metro will be not just a faster alternative but also a more economical and dependable choice.

"Prime Minister will flag off the metro train from Sector-1 and will travel in that train until GIFT City. Phase-II will provide further connectivity to Phase-I. The trains that were running in Phase-I, from Gyaspur to Motera, will now connect to Gandhinagar," said Pushkar Singla, Chief General Manager (Corporate Planning), GMRC.

Routes To Be Covered

According to a release, Part I of Phase 2 extends 21 kilometers, featuring eight new metro stations that will enhance transportation across both residential and commercial zones. Meanwhile, Part Two of Phase 1, still under construction, will link Sector 1 in Gandhinagar to Mahatma Mandir, a major convention and exhibition center in the state capital.

According to officials, Metro expansion is just one part of Gujarat 's broader strategy to build a robust and sustainable urban transport network, including its Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), which boasts nearly 1.75 lakh daily commuters in Ahmedabad.

The official also mentioned that the metro network is designed to seamlessly integrate with the BRTS, the railway system, and the forthcoming bullet train project connecting Ahmedabad to Mumbai.
