Is Your Milk Adulterated With Detergent? Find Out With This FSSAI Approved Test
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched an informative campaign to help consumers test their milk for common adulterants.
In a move to address the issue of food adulteration in India, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) informs citizens on ways to check their dairy essentials like milk for possible adulteration. Some of most common low quality or harmful addition to your daily milk consumption ranges from detergents to maltodextrin. Knowing before-hand on ways to test your milk can protect people from chemical burns to your throat and destruction of essential vitamins that you'd expect from day-to-day milk consumption.
On their official X account, FSSAI has posted a series of instructional videos demonstrating straightforward tests to detect common adulterants. Here’s how you can perform these tests:
Is their detergent in your milk?
Steps to detect: Pour 5 to 10 ml of milk into two separate containers.
Shake both samples vigorously.
If bubbles form in one sample but not in the other, the milk with bubbles is likely adulterated with detergent. Genuine milk will not produce bubbles under these conditions.
How to figure out if your milk contains maltodextrin?
Steps to detect: Take 5 ml of milk in a container.
Add 2 ml of iodine reagent to the milk.
Mix thoroughly and observe any color change.
A colour shift indicates the presence of maltodextrin, an additive that can compromise the milk’s purity.
These easy-to-follow tests are endorsed by the FSSAI and offer a practical approach for consumers to ensure their milk is free from harmful substances. By regularly using these tests, you can safeguard your health and enjoy the full benefits of your dairy products.
