November 7 marks a significant event in India's glorious Test history. On this day in 1979, India won its first-ever Test series against Australia 2-0. This was the last series Australia played before the compromise agreement between the erstwhile Australian Cricket Board (now Cricket Australia) and World Series Cricket.

India had started their rise to the top of world cricket slowly and it could be said that this win gave them a lot of confidence to dominate a Test series played at home.

How India managed to win their first-ever Test series against Australia

First Test: Madras

Australia were bowled out for 390 in the first innings. India scored 425 as Kapil Dev hit 83 off 74 balls. Aussies were reduced to 212/7 in their second innings before rain interrupted the game as it ended in a draw.

Second Test: Bangalore

The rain gods were relentless and marred the second Test at Bangalore as well. Local hero Gundappa Viswanath's crafty unbeaten 161 and Dilip Vengsarkar's 112 were the highlights of the match as India posted 457 in response to Australia's first innings score of 333. The match was drawn.

Third Test: Kanpur

India were in a strong position at 214/4 but were eventually bowled out for 271 in the first innings after winning the toss and batting first. The Aussies fought hard and got a slender lead. India set them a target of 279 runs for them. But a deteriorating pitch got to the visitors as they were bowled out for 125, handing India a 153-run win.

Fourth Test: Delhi

A batting paradise at Feroze Shah Kotla in Delhi saw India post a total in excess of 500. Kapil Dev's fifer helped reduce Australia for 298 and the visitors were asked to follow on, which raised hopes of victory. The Australian batsmen though showed resilience and batted out the remaining part of the match, scoring 413 in the second innings to draw the game.

Fifth Test: Calcutta

Australia scored 442 in the first innings. The Indian top-order responded well but a lower-order collapse meant Australia got a 95-run lead. Australia declared at 151/6, setting the hosts a target of 247 for victory. The match ended in a draw as India finished 47 runs shy of the target.

Sixth Test: Mumbai

The hosts batted first and posted 458 in the first innings. Australia needing to win the Test to tie the series but were all at sea as spinners Dilip Doshi (5/43) and Shivlal Yadav (4/40) scuttled the visitors out for 160, making India enforce a follow-on. Allan Border and Kim Hughes tried to battle it out but Kapil Dev's four-wicket haul and three more wickets by Doshi ended the Aussie fight. India won by an innings and 100 runs to win the match as well as the series.
