The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 clash between the defending champions Australia and former champions West Indies was completely overshadowed by umpiring blunders as the Calypso Boys bore the brunt for these awkward decisions as they fell short of Australia's target as the Aaron Finch-led side won their second consecutive match by 15 runs. There were too many errors while Chris Gayle was at the crease as the big power hitter had to take a couple of reviews for leg before decisions where the hawk eye suggested that the ball was clearly going down the leg side. Even skipper Jason Holder's stay at the crease was prolonged due to the availability of DRS. However, the worst blow for the West Indies came when Chris Gayle was trapped right in front of the wicket by Mitchell Starc and he was given out. Surprisingly, Starc had bowled a big no-ball in the previous delivery and it would have been a free-hit had the umpire showed some presence of mind.

 

Nonetheless, irrespective of these umpiring blunders, there was something for the cricket fans to cheer about in the first innings as they witnessed yet another incredible catch after Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes. This time, the man who gave the English players a run for their money was none other than Sheldon Cottrell. 

It happened in the 45th over of the Australian innings when Steve Smith and Nathan Coulter-Nile were looking to take Australia to a mammoth target. Oshane Thomas bowled a simple one as Smith smashed it to backward square leg fence. The ball was timed well and it appeared that he would get a maximum. But, Cottrell came running a long way and attempted a one-handed catch. Realizing that he would not be able to balance himself and would end up crossing the boundary line, the speedster flicked the ball in the air, went inside the boundary, came out and took a perfect catch. He did not lose focus as his eyes were on the ball until he held on to it.
