‘He has done superbly’ Former cricketer praises KL Rahul's unwavering batting style at No.5 for IND
Former Indian Cricketer opines about KL Rahul's position in the team as he will be leading Team India for the 3-match series ODI against South Africa.
SA vs. IND: Former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar believes that KL Rahul shouldn't move up in the ODI batting order. Rahul is all set to captain the young side against South Africa. On Sunday, December 17, India will take on South Africa in their maiden ODI encounter. After a brief hiatus, KL Rahul is returning to international cricket and will captain India in the three-match series.
For the three-match series, India has fielded a young Indian team without the services of Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, or Virat Kohli.
Three things you need to know:
- The men in blue are all set to take over South Africa in the first ODI on 17 December, Sunday
- KL Rahul will be leading the Indian Team for the 3-match ODI Series
- Sanjay Manjrekar believes that KL Rahul shouldn't change his position from no.5
IND vs SA: Shreyas Iyer available for the first ODI
Shreyas Iyer will also be available for India in the first ODI because the batsman will be concentrating on the two-match Test series. In that scenario, should KL Rahul change the order? In Sanjay Manjrekar's opinion, no. Before the opening ODI in Johannesburg, Manjrekar stated that the batsman ought to remain at position number five. In ODI cricket, KL Rahul has been outstanding at number five. Rahul has scored 711 runs at an average of 64.6 from 17 innings at the position in 2023.
Manjrekar's view on KL Rahul's Position in the middle order
"You would not want to change KL Rahul's position in the batting order. He has done superbly at No. 5 since the Asia Cup and then in the World Cup 2023. KL Rahul has all the abilities to be a consistent No. 5 and I think that's how the team management will go," Sanjay Manjrekar told ESPNcricinfo.
Following his recovery from his injury during the Asia Cup 2023, Rahul returned to the ODI team. Rahul returned to the field to play against Pakistan in the continental competition after missing almost four and a half months of cricket. After his comeback, Rahul struck a century and went on to dominate the middle order.
The batter provided the young players with confidence by speaking before the game and stated that as India looks to shift to the ODI format of the game, the young players are required to feel at ease in their shoes.
“I don’t think a lot will change in terms of how we want to play ODI cricket. There are a few new faces and to expect them to go out and play the role that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli played in the World Cup will be too early. You have to give them time and make them feel comfortable. There’s no added pressure from my side,” Rahul was quoted as saying in the pre-series press conference.
