January 3 saw an incredible first day at Newlands, Cape Town, with a total of 23 wickets falling in an intense match between South Africa and India. After choosing to bat first, the hosts were bowled out for a meagre 55 runs, the lowest since they resumed playing Test cricket and the eighth-lowest in their history. India's reply got off to a strong start, driven by 39 by Rohit Sharma, 36 by Shubman Gill, and a composed 46 from Virat Kohli. After losing six wickets without scoring any more runs, the batting collapsed from 153/4 to 153 all out, despite a fantastic session by seamer Lungi Ngidi who took three wickets in an over.
