Elgar has been a mainstay in South Africa's Test side for many years but the emergence of several young batters might have influenced his decision.
"Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate! Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have," Elgar said in a statement.
After making his debut in 2012, Dean Elgar has scored 13 hundreds for SA while scoring 5146 runs at an average of 37.3. ESPNcricinfo reported that Elgar has already informed Cricket South Africa after getting to know that he is not a big part of SA Test coach Shukri Conrad's plans. Elgar might play for Essex in the County season next year.
