With the IPL 2025 in full swing, some new rules and duties have been added to the tournament from the ongoing season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has broadened the roles of the fourth umpire in the cash-rich league from now on. The fourth official, who operates while being across the boundary line, will have an increased role that allows him to undertake random checks and also keep a close on certain aspects.
The fourth umpire's additional roles were briefed to all the IPL franchise skippers at the recent all-captain meeting in Mumbai. The official has been granted to take up random inspection on the size of the bats on practice and match days as well as the ball selection. He will also look after the access to the pitch area and will supervise the selection of the new ball by acting as an emergency third umpire. The umpire will also be responsible for keeping an eye on the bowlers who exit the field to take a rest after their spell and also on those who are habitual offenders for the same.
"The 4th Umpire is an important member of the team, the voice of the PCT at the boundary. Players are requested not to approach the 4th Umpire for any grievance against a decision. The 4th umpire is empowered to check bats at any time on matchdays & practice days. They will be monitoring those bowlers who have left the field after finishing their bowling quota & those players who are habitual offenders of leaving the field to take rest," a BCCI note which had the minutes of the Captains' Meet mentioned.
