Rohit Sharma lifted his second ICC title in Dubai as India defeated New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai. This is also India's second ICC Champions Trophy title after the T20 World Cup last year, in a span of nine months.
The Men In Blue remained unbeaten throughout the Champions Trophy 2025 and inflicted a dominating loss on Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand and Australia in the semifinal.
Jasprit Bumrah missed out on a place in the Champions Trophy squad, and Mohammed Shami was charged with leading the bowling attack. The Sunrisers Hyderabad fast bowler didn't disappoint and picked up nine wickets in the proceedings.
Cooper Connolly made his maiden Champions Trophy start against Australia but he was dismissed very cheaply by Shami who also had a three-wicket haul in the match. India have now defeated Australia in consecutive ICC white ball tournaments after conceding that disappointing loss in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup final.
The Australian all-rounder heaped praises on Shami, citing the fast bowler as world-class. As quoted by the ICC website he said, “As a kid, you always want to represent your country, and to walk out there in a semi-final was an unbelievable experience, and I'll take a lot of learnings from it.
"Shami is a world class player for a reason. He's played a lot of cricket.
"In the end, it was a great game of cricket and I think we took a lot of learnings as a group from that.”
There were also rumours that both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were hanging up their boots, regardless of the result in the Champions Trophy final. But in the post match press conference, Rohit categorically denied all the rumours saying he doesn't have any intention of quitting ODI cricket as of now. Alongside Rohit, Virat is also unlikely to retire from the white ball format any time soon.
