The Eden Gardens pitch curator, Sujan Mukherjee, has been the subject of criticism after Ajinkya Rahane's outburst about the Eden Gardens pitch. This happened in the aftermath of Kolkata Knight Riders ' opening fixture against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22.
While addressing the post-match press conference, Rahane had said there should be something on the surface for the spinners. Despite having two frontline spinners with the likes of Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine, none of the bowlers could have that much-needed impact in the game.
KKR have always banked on their spinners, as Eden Gardens tends to offer a turning track to maximise the impact. But it hasn't been the case this season, as batters seemed to have enjoyed batting even under the lights. Batting first, the reigning IPL champions posted a formidable 174 runs on the board. Riding on Virat Kohli and Phil Salt's onslaught, RCB completed the chase in just 16.2 overs. As quoted by the Hindustan Times, Rahane had said, “We would love to see the pitch helping the spin bowlers but again, this wicket was under covers for the last one-and-a-half days.
“Both the spinners we have, the quality they have, they can bowl in any kind of wicket and I am sure they are confident as well.”
Fans have now taken to social media and have vented their frustration on the Cricket Association of Bengal, which is in charge of the iconic stadium.
KKR will now now host the Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 3, and it remains to be seen if the pitch offers something for the spinners.
