DYK Dharmendra's Salary For His Debut Film Was One-fourth Of Today's Movie Ticket Prices

The passing of Dharmendra has left a deep void in the Hindi film industry. The actor appeared in more than 300 films in his career spanning over six decades. From Sholay to Seeta Aur Geeta, the actor has left a timeless legacy behind after his demise.

Dharmendra began his career with the 1960 film Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere. The actor was only 20 years old when he appeared on celluloid for the first time. The cinema icon was bitten by the movie bug after winning Filmfare magazine's nationally organised new talent award, following which he moved from Punjab to Mumbai.

Even though he made his debut in 1960, his first film was far from the fireworks and the superstar reception he had expected. The actor appeared in  Arjun Hingorani's romantic drama Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, which went largely unnoticed at the box office. For the film, the actor was reportedly paid ₹51, which came together by three filmmakers pooling in ₹17 each. Currently, movie tickets cost considerably more than the actor's first salary.

Though his first film did not do wonders, Dharmendra quickly found fame the following year with Ramesh Saigal's Shola Aur Shabnam. He went on to feature in iconic films in the subsequent years. Dharmendra played a pivotal role in  Bimal Roy's Bandini, which was released in 1983, and the movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi that year.
