The sudden passing of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota sent shockwaves through the world of football, with fans of all sides uniting in grief to pay tribute to a person who was beloved across circles, whether at his club or in the national team.

Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically lost their lives due to an accident on a Spanish highway. Subsequent investigations into the accident absolved either of them of any wrongdoing but the loss was profoundly felt by fans of not only the 2024-25 Premier League champions, but fans around the world.

And now Liverpool have paid a massive tribute to the forward by keeping his name among their squad list.

Classy Tribute to Jota

Like all club websites, Liverpool have a space that shows their full current squad for both the senior men's and women's teams.

Liverpool's current men's team lists all of the players at the club according to their positions, but they created a new one for Jota.

Instead of being listed under the ‘forwards’ banner, Jota has been kept in a special category titled ‘Forever’.

The term indicates that the club intend keeping him as a part of the squad and that it will remain even as other categories will invariably change.

Posthumous Honours for Portugal Forward

This isn't the first major tribute they have made - the club took the step to retire his number 20 jersey in his memory.

What's more, a mural was also finalised in the city to honour their number 20, who played a key role in them winning their 20th league title in the 2024-25 season.

Jota was also feted by his former side Wolverhampton Wanderers, the club from which he would join Liverpool in the 2020 summer transfer window.

He was inducted into the Wolves Hall of Fame after his death, a place he would have rightfully had even before his tragic passing in July 2025.
