Are you feeling heavy and full, and wondering if it’s safe to work out while pregnant? The good news is that reports suggest that staying active should be a priority for the next 9 months. So yes, working out during pregnancy is recommended!
Importance of working out while pregnant
According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), exercising during pregnancy can reduce the risk of preterm birth, cesarean delivery, excessive weight gain, gestational diabetes, hypertensive disorders like preeclampsia, and low birth weight.
Staying active during pregnancy helps maintain physical fitness, reduces lower back pain, manages symptoms of depression and anxiety, decreases stress, and improves postpartum recovery.
How long can I exercise during pregnancy?
The ACOG recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. Aerobic activity involves using large muscle groups, such as the legs and arms, in a rhythmic way. Moderate intensity means you’re moving enough to raise your heart rate and start sweating. You should still be able to talk but not sing while exercising.
Safety tips for pregnancy work out
To ensure a smooth and healthy pregnancy journey, keep these safety tips from ACOG in mind:
- Drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise.
- Wear supportive clothing, such as a well-fitting sports bra or belly band.
- Avoid overheating, especially during the first trimester.
- Avoid lying flat on your back for extended periods, especially during the third trimester.
