“The BCCI will certainly discuss whether to have a new captain on board going ahead. The Indian board has provided everything which the team wanted and we feel it’s high time a new face leads the team going ahead. Harmanpreet will continue to be an important member of the team but the BCCI feels it’s time for transition,” a source in the Indian board told the Indian Express.
According to the report, her place in the squad is safe. The all-important meeting is expected to take place before the squad announcement for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, which starts on October 24.
Harman was appointed as India’s T20I captain in 2016. Under her leadership, the eves in blue managed to qualify for the semis of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018 and 2023 and played in the final of the 2020 edition.
The likely alternative for captaincy is current vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who also has leadership experience having led Royal Challengers Bangalore to the WPL title in 2024. Smriti is also one of the best batters in the world currently. The next few days would be interesting to see what happens with Harman.
