The Indian Premier League ( IPL ) is on the cusp of a new season, and with it might come a slew of changes to the rules and regulations that govern the tournament. As the franchises and players prepare for the auction, several key changes may shape the dynamics of the teams and the tournament itself.

From the potential scrapping of the Impact Player rule to the increase in salary cap and the possibility of more retentions, the IPL 2025 season promises to be an exciting and unpredictable ride. Let's delve into the details of these changes and what they mean for the teams, players, and fans.

Impact Player Rule

The Impact Player rule, which allows teams to substitute a player during a match, might be scrapped. While broadcasters are in favor of the rule, franchises and players are not. The BCCI will discuss this rule during their meeting with franchise owners.

RTM Option

The Right to Match (RTM) option, which allows teams to automatically buy a player who represented them last season if they match the highest bid, might be off the table. This option was removed in the 2021 auction to allow new franchises Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans a larger player pool.

Number of Retentions

The number of retentions for each team could be five or six players. The BCCI is not in favor of the eight retention policy, as they feel too many star players would be taken out of the auction pool, making the event lackluster.

Salary Cap

The salary cap for each team for the upcoming season could be set at INR 120 crore. Last year, the amount was INR 100 crore for each franchise. This increase in the cap could mean each team's top retained player could be paid around INR 20 crore for their services.

Retention Dynamics

Teams are allowed to retain four players, three Indians and one overseas player or two Indians and two overseas players. However, there is a possibility that teams might be allowed to retain five players, with two overseas and three Indians.

Mega Auction

The IPL 2025 auction will most likely be a mega auction, where all teams will have to release most of their players and buy new ones. This auction is held every three years, and it's a great opportunity for teams to rebuild their squads.
