'Our lives have turned to hell'

He hadn’t been able to reach his father for two entire weeks due to the heavy fighting and frequent network outages. When he finally reached him, it was to find him dead. When he finally reached home, it was to find it destroyed, the once-vibrant coastal neighbourhood utterly transformed by Israel’s devastating ground invasion. The streets have become fields of inert grey rubble. Where his house once stood there were bits and pieces of furniture, blankets stained with blood and, beneath the stones and cement, the lifeless bodies of his father and his nephew. He buried both of their bodies in the yard, a final attempt at preserving their dignity after two weeks of heavy fighting in which nobody could retrieve the bodies and they lay there decomposing under the sun.
