ADO-’ROAR’-BLE: Rare White Lion Born In Hungary Zoo Makes A Grand First Appearance

There’s something about the way little ones, be it humans or animals, look that gives us a feeling of joy like none other. This delight multiplies manifold when the offspring is a rare species, something not seen often. This can be explained with how a rare white lion, born in a Hungary zoo, has already attained celebrity status after making her first public appearance recently.

The cub, Sonja, has been born to, Nadja, her mother and Timba, her father, at the Szeged Zoo in South Hungary on May 15. She had weighed 1.5 kilos then and the birth process was without any complications. 

The official Twitter handle of the People’s Daily, China shared an adorable photograph of Sonja being tended to by doctors. The handle captioned the post, “Hello Sonja! A rare white lion, born in the Szeged Zoo in #Hungary on May 15, made its first public appearance on Fri.” 

The handle clarified that the species were not albinos, meaning those who faced a form of deficiency that results in lighter, often white, skin and other rarities of the hair and the eyes. 

 The tweet continued, “White lions are not albinos, but have coloration that results from a genetic rarity.” 

The netizens were left mesmerised by the snap and called Sonja, ‘cute’, ‘beautiful’, ‘little fatty’ and much more.   

Sonja’s father has been separated from her a few days ago, but the whole family is also expected to make an appearance together soon.

The zoo is open for visitors, who want to catch a glimpse of the adorable cub. Sonja’s movements are being watched on a monitor, and also on the zoo’s website. 

According to reports, there are just over 300 white lions in the world, out of which only around a dozen live in the wild, while the rest are in captivity.
