Bhopal: The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Friday suspended the bar license of Bhopal-based advocate Samarth Singh with immediate effect, ten days after his wife Twisha Sharma was found hanging at their home under mysterious circumstances.

The BCI's crackdown on Samarth comes shortly after he was taken into police custody over allegations linked to the mysterious death of his wife. During the period of suspension, Samarth shall not appear, act, plead, practice, file vakalatnama, or hold himself out as entitled to practise before any Court, Tribunal, Authority or forum in India.

“The present matter concerns serious allegations arising out of the death of Ms. Twisha Sharma, wife of Shri Samarth Singh, Advocate, within a few months of marriage, at her matrimonial home at Bhopal," BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra noted.

In an official release, the BCI Chairman also noted that an FIR has been registered against Samarth and others in relation to allegations of dowry death, cruelty and allied offences. He further stressed that it has been brought to BCI's notice that Samarth is not cooperating with the investigation.

BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra called allegations against Samarth Singh “grave”, adding that it has a direct bearing upon the dignity, discipline and public image of the legal profession.

“An advocate is not merely a private individual but an officer of the Court and a member of a regulated profession. The Bar Council of India is under a statutory duty to preserve the purity of the profession and to ensure that the conduct of advocates does not erode public confidence in the administration of justice,” he added.

“In view of the seriousness of the allegations, the role of Advocate in killing his wife, the registration of criminal proceedings, the fact that the concerned advocate is the husband of the deceased…it is considered necessary to pass an urgent interim order in the interest of the legal profession and public confidence. Samarth Singh…is hereby suspended from practice as an advocate with immediate effect, pending further consideration,” the BCI concluded.

The official BCI order also stressed that the “urgent interim measure” has been undertaken in the interest of the dignity and discipline of the legal profession, without prejudice to the criminal investigation, trial, or any defence available to the concerned advocate in accordance with law.

Twisha Sharma's Mysterious Death

Twisha Sharma

Twisha Sharma, who was former Miss Pune, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area on the night of May 12 under suspicious circumstances. She had married Samarth in December 2025, roughly five months before her death.

The official post-mortem cited hanging as the cause of death, but her family pointed to multiple injury marks on her body, alleging that she was murdered, and did not commit suicide. It is also alleged that Twisha terminated her pregnancy after her husband questioned her whose child she was carrying, accusing her of having extra-marital affair.

Samarth's Surrender Attempt After Absconding For 10 Days

After absconding for 10 days since his wife's death, Samarth Singh emerged before the public on Friday as he reached the Jabalpur court to surrender himself. However, the divisional judge refused to accept his surrender, directing him to surrender in Bhopal, the original jurisdiction of the alleged crime.

Samarth Singh's lawyer reportedly claimed that his client reached Jabalpur to surrender because he feared that there could be a threat to his life if he went to Bhopal.

Meanwhile, Twisha's lawyer Anurag Shrivastava said that the former is resorting to gimmicks. He added that Samarth Singh was supposed to surrender in Bhopal, not in Jabalpur.

He stressed, “If he has to surrender, he should either do it in the trial court or before the investigative officer.”

The Jabalpur High Court on Friday ordered a second post-mortem, directing that a specialised team constituted by the Director of AIIMS Delhi conduct the procedure in Bhopal. Justice Avnindra Kumar Singh passed the order after serious concerns were raised regarding the first autopsy report, forensic inconsistencies and gaps in the investigation.

The court directed that Twisha’s body be preserved at minus 80 degrees Celsius till the second autopsy is conducted. Videography of the entire procedure has also been mandated and will form part of the final report.

It will also constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) shortly, comprising a team of officers drawn from its Delhi and Madhya Pradesh units.

The SIT will operate under the leadership of a CBI DIG.

‘Maa, Mera Dam Ghut Raha Hai’: Twisha's Last Chats With Mother

Chilling WhatsApp chats of Twisha Sharma with her mother just days before she was found dead revealed the intensity of the emotional distress she was going through in her last days at her in-laws' place.

The chats also revealed her helplessness as she felt isolated and was allegedly being subjected to mental harassment by her in-laws and her husband, just months after her marriage.

In chats dating May 7, Twisha was seen begging her mother to come and rescue her from her in-laws' place.

She told her mother, “Maa, aap mujhe yaha se lene aa jaao kal please. I don't think Samarth ko ab mai chaheye hu…Pata nahi ab maine kya kiya, Samarth ne kaha hai 1 saal se jhel rahe hai mujhe. Mujhe nahi samajh aaraha hai mummy mai karu toh kya karu. (Maa, please come to take me. I don't think Samarth wants me anymore. I don't know what I did. He told me that he is tolerating me for 1 year. I can't understand what should I do.”)

The chats also revealed that she was desperate to get out of her husband's home. She told her mother to take ticket for the next day itself, saying, “Direct train bhi hai.”

Twisha also told her mother about the serious allegations of extra-martial affairs being levelled on her by her husband and how it was affecting her.

Lamenting before her mother on WhatsApp, Twisha said, “Samarth pooch raha hai kiska baccha tha jo abort kiya hai! Mummy yaha par mai bus pagal ho jaungi. Mujhse nahi ho pa raha ab ye sab. (Samarth asked whose child I aborted. Mummy, I will go crazy. I can't handle this anymore.)”

Twisha seemed to be stuck at her matrimonial home, with no hopes. Her chats purportedly revealed that she was being mercilessly subjected to mental torture. She told her mother that her in-laws are heartless, saying, “Ye sab bohot zyada nirdayi hai mummy. (They are very heartless, mummy. They show no mercy. They only show mercy to lower class.)”

Later, Twisha expressed utter hopelessness, saying, “Mera ab dum ghut raha hai maa yaha. (I feel suffocated here).” When her mother said that she could come and resolve the matter, Twisha lamented, “Kuch nahi ho sakta ab sahi (Now nothing can be corrected.)”

'Mother-In-Law Accused Of Judicial Coverup'

Giri Bala with Twisha and Samarth

Twisha Sharma's family has accused Giri Bala Singh of a “judicial cover-up”, claiming that she made frantic phone calls to several judges and influential figures shortly after Twisha’s death.

According to the family, she made over 40 phone calls to judges, ministry-linked individuals and influential figures shortly after Twisha’s death in Bhopal. Twisha’s father released a list of purported mobile numbers contacted by Giri Bala.

Calls logs accessed by Republic TV revealed that she allegedly dialled a district judge nine times in one day, and also contacted CCTV operators and an IPS officer in the Lokayukta.

She also called her son, Samarth Singh, three times after he fled.

Advocate Ankur Pandey said, “Giri Bala called so many influential people after Twisha’s death, but did not make a single call to the victim's family.”

Twisha's family has alleged that her connections with influential people may have impacted the course of the investigation.
