S Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister (EAM) of India on Wednesday (Indian Standard Time) while commemorating Mahatma Gandhi's 150th anniversary stated that Gandhi's advocacy of simple living and high thinking has highlighted living in consonance with the environment, reigning in excessive consumerism and exploitation of natural resources amongst individuals. Addressing the crowd, he further stated that today's generation is confronting challenges as diverse as climate change and gender justice to terrorism and social development. Mahatma Gandhi's commemorating was held in New York.
According to EAM Jaishankar, Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy and outlook of powerful tools have discerned the path to addressing them. "He made us think about climate change before that term was even invented. In every way, he is the symbol of the sustainable development goals that we today seek to achieve," he said. During the event, he also said that Gandhi's life was also an example of standing up to fear and intimidation. "His thoughts are a source of courage as we fight terrorism in all its forms and manifestation. His ideas have influenced some of the greatest figures of our age," he added. S Jaishankar urged that communities all over the world need inspired leaders to shape a hopeful future. He added that today, we have in our midst those who have led through their values and examples.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, at an event commemorating the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. According to PM Modi, Mahatma Gandhi's philosophies have inspired the lives of those who never ever met him. Martin Luther King Junior and Nelson Mandela's policies and ideologies were based on Mahatma Gandhi's vision. He further remarked that Gandhi's ideas made him a powerful and influential figure. However, he added, he never used his qualities to influence anyone, but used them to inspire people, for all the right reasons.

Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary commemoration event was held in New York at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday (IST). The event was titled 'Leadership Matters - Relevance of Mahatma Gandhi in the Contemporary World'. During the event, several leaders and dignitaries addressed a speech to the crowd. PM Modi inaugurated three launches at the event- Gandhi solar park, Gandhi peace garden and the release of UN Postage stamps on Gandhi.
