Canadian journalist Ezra Levant confronting Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi over the grim media censorship in Pakistan shamed and defaced his reputation on the international forum.
Levant lambasted Imran Khan's Minister over Pakistan government's ability to censor tweets of users based in the US and Canada. He further claimed that his twitter handle was shut down.
Qureshi was on the panel at the Defend Media Freedom conference in London, when the Canadian journalist vigorous called him out for censoring his tweet on the Pakistani blasphemy law.
He asked Qureshi, "Can you explain, why is the your Islamic supremacy in Pakistan is silencing my personal and journalistic freedom in Canada?"
He told the panel, "You should be embarrassed to invite a censor like this," and further questioned Qureshi over censorship.
Meanwhile, in an attempt to play the victim, Qureshi took offense at the tone of Levant. Qureshi said, "I urge you not to be swayed by negative characterisation in international media about Pakistan, which tends to overlook Pakistan’s accomplishments in media and other areas."
"You have double standards and what you are propping up a certain sections agenda. I have been respectful to you," Qureshi added.
The Pakistani Minister further stated that nearly 89 private news channels are operating in Pakistan and that three of them were taken off for a few hours.
To which, Levant passionately retaliated saying Pakistan dislikes 'free speech'
He said, "Who the hell are you to censor me in Canada? I know because you don't like free speech. You censored me, shame on you."
"You censorious thug!" Levant added, pointing at the Pakistani Foreign Minister.
It is also known that the event was boycotted by International media, and saw empty seats as journalists protested against the concerns of free speech in Pakistan.
